12 Months of Discovery

I don’t really do New Year’s resolutions.

I’ve made my share of year-end commitments over the years (write more, connect with book clubs). Mostly, these commitments helped me pay attention to things I might otherwise have forgotten about in the swirl of daily life.

This year, I am making a public commitment and inviting you to come along with me.

I want to make this a year of discovery.

Last apple
This last apple, clinging to the tree after the others have fallen, seemed an apt symbol for today’s discovery: the Buddhist meditation practice of maranasati, or contemplation of death.

I’m not sure exactly how this will unfold. For a while, I’ve felt in need of something to wrest me from the comfortable grooves (ruts?) of daily life. Although I accomplished a lot in 2019, the contours of each day feel startlingly similar.

I will divide 2020 into 12 segments, conveniently corresponding to the months, each with a different theme. Every day, I’ll share an idea, photograph, quote, or link on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook related to that theme.

January is “learn about something new” month because, although I haven’t been to school in decades, I hope I’m not too old to be a student. I haven’t figured out all the months’ themes yet, so if you have suggestions, please let me know!

I hope you’ll accompany me on this journey. Just follow me on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook to come along.

P.S. For those of you allergic to social media, I’ll publish a monthly blog post recapping what I’ve shared. Subscribe to get updates.

  1. Discovery is a lovely word to focus on for the year. I like your 12 month plan which makes your intention seem more doable and creative. I look forward to seeing where this word takes you.

    1. What I have found in the couple of weeks I have dedicated myself to this is how easy it is to get stuck in the rut of the usual. If I weren’t trying to honor my public commitment, days might go by when my mind goes over and over the same ideas/questions/thoughts it has entertained for years, without considering anything new!

    1. Well, I haven’t really thought it through yet. But in addition to “learning about something new,” I’m thinking maybe “underappreciated voices in literature” and “things you should have learned in school but didn’t” and “countries you never heard of.” An eclectic mix, and I’m trying to keep my options open by not naming them all in advance.
