Welcome to Funbruary

“I am a cat, and my life is non-stop fun.”

On order this month: more laughter

People often tell me I’m too serious. I often think they’re right.

So, as part of my year of discovery, I’m going to devote the month of February to having fun.

The concept of fun means something very different now than it did when I was a springier chicken. No all-night partying or bottomless Bloody Marys. Come to think of it, those things never really appealed to me. I’ve always been more inclined to get my jollies by curling up with a good book and a cup of tea.

Nonetheless, I’ll be on a quest this month for things that make me laugh, for absurdities and non sequiturs, for humor in its many forms and activities that enliven me.

Oh, and I will be buying some clear glue, borax, and starch. And maybe some balloons.

What do you do for fun? Let me know in the comments. Maybe I’ll try one of the suggestions!

P.S. for local (San Francisco/Peninsula/South Bay) readers

My first public fun happens on February 3 when perform read as part of an ensemble event. Come spice up your Monday evening!

What I learned in January

As promised, here’s a roundup of my 31 days (almost) of learning new things in January. I mostly shared on Twitter, so if you don’t follow me there, you may have missed these. The links on the dates below go to the items I shared. A few I shared on Facebook or Instagram.

01/31/20: Today I learned about @headexchange on @SamHarrisOrg‘s podcast. It’s not a stretch to say it blew my mind. I feel the pieces falling into place. Signed up for a webinar in February. #consciousness #selfhood #identity #ego

01/30/20: Today I learned that having 35 browser tabs open (plus 18 pinned tabs) is probably too much. No wonder I feel #overwhelmed.

01/29/20: Today I learned there is a whole blog devoted to #stairs in #SanFrancisco and environs. Will definitely be using as reference during my #GrandCanyon #hike training.

01/28/20: Today I learned about #blockchain (in lay terms) so I can stop feeling so ill-informed when I write about “blockchain technology.”

01/27/20: Today I learned of a poet, new to me, from long ago.

01/26/20: Today may have to pass without me learning anything new. I went through my whole day doing the same old shit and now I’m too tired. Promise to do better tomorrow.

01/25/20: Today I learned that my second cousin once removed (thank you, Geni.com) Helen Handelman made her NYC directorial debut with the play “Six Years Old” about a six-year-old girl who wants to be a boy (and her annoyed 4 year old brother), which got well-reviewed and got the playwright published.

01/24/20: Today I learned how to make oat milk. 1) Get a very tiny milking machine. 2) Hook it up to your oat… Just kidding. All you need is #oats, water, and a blender, according to @minimalistbaker #DIY #cooking

01/23/20: Today I learned how important an ancient Egyptian’s voice might have been after death: “Only if the gods agreed could the deceased soul pass through into eternity – if they failed the test they died a second, permanent death.”  #egyptology #mummy

01/22/20: Today I learned the top #dog breeds to consider if you also have a #cat. (Not that I’m thinking about this…) #PetHarmony

01/21/20: Forgot to learn something new today. Instead shared the book giveaway I participated in. Searching for your next great read ? Look no further! These #authors have teamed up to offer a delightful selection of books. Just 10 more days to grab them. #freebooks #Giveaway #amreading

01/20/20: Not sure what made me want to learn this today but I did. Remember it for #TriviaTuesday

01/19/20: Today I learned I am in better shape than I thought. 1,000 stairs with 10 lbs in my pack on 1st day of #grandcanyonhike #Training. Need to work up to 25 lbs and 100 flights.

01/18/20: Thanks @DavidGaughran for sharing the story behind The Piña Colada Song and for the reminder of “Marketing Lesson #1: a title is part of the commercial packaging – ignore your Inner Artist when it comes to business decisions.” #marketing #writing #music

01/17/20: Today I learned that the answer to the question “why do women read #fiction?” has not been definitively answered. Food for thought in @EricaWgnr’s article in @NewStatesman. #feminism #literature

01/16/20: Today I learned that Algol is a variable star in the #constellation Perseus. More surprisingly, I learned that there is an American Association of Variable Star Observers #stargazing #astronomy #nightsky

01/15/20: “The crisp, cold nights in the fall combine with bright, sunny days to spur production of red in leaves.” Must have learned in school but wanted a reminder because today I found this brilliant leaf while on a walk. Preserved it by ironing under wax paper.

01/14/20: Forgot to learn something new today.

01/13/20: Today I learned (re-learned) how much fun it is (and how productive it can be) to interview my characters. They did tell me some crazy shit. #writingtips #amwriting

01/12/20: Learned today: “In Svalbard, a remote Norwegian island, it is illegal to die…because bodies are unable to be buried safely due to the permafrost…If you are about to die, they fly you back to mainland Norway to pass on there.” Thx @TheFactSite #FunFact

01/11/20: Today I found my #knightinshiningarmor at Bay Area Stage Productions waiting to hear @shinedelirious and Zoltar in “When Rock Went Symphonic.” #livemusic #progressiverock #saturdaynight

01/10/20: Today I learned: John Updike almost became a #cartoonist instead of a #writer.

01/09/20: Things I did NOT want to learn today, courtesy of @waitbutwhy. Thanks for putting #history in perspective and making me #FeelReallyOld. https://buff.ly/2tpEwVu

01/08/20: Today I learned about a poet/potter, courtesy of @brainpickings, M.K. Richards, who wrote “Let us ride our lives like natural beasts, like tempests, like the bounce of a ball or the slightest ambiguous hovering of ash, the drift of scent.” #poetry  #art

01/07/20: What I learned today? Sometimes you’re too tired to #learn something new.

01/06/20: Today in #learning something new (about #words) I did a comparison: @thesauruscom vs. Roget’s third edition (c) the year I was born. I looked up “hell” and found a big difference. Roget goes on for 7 entries with many literary references. #synonyms

01/05/20: Today I learned: Seems like all #movietheater seats are now reserved. And upgraded for comfort/falling asleep. But at least they’re telling me (by nickname) where to go to see #parasitemovie. #sundayafternoon #weekendvibes

01/04/20: Today I leaned: @jk_rowling has once again assumed the spot of world’s highest-paid author. The good news? I actually earned SOMETHING from my #books, which beats NOTHING. #WritingLife #ANewFactEveryDay

01/03/20: Most people know Billie Holiday and Lena Horne… but you’ve probably never heard of this amazing #musician, Hazel Scott. I hadn’t, until I saw this short documentary essay by filmmaker Eve Goldberg. #jazz #blacklisting

01/02/20: The second new thing I am learning this month: One of the muscles referred to as “quads” is the vastus lateralis. It’s the largest of the fours quads. When you contract it, you move your kneecap up. #PracticalAnatomy #AppreciateYourBody #DiscoverWithMe

01/01/20: The first in my #2020 series of shares about my journey to learn about something new every day this month. Today: the Tibetan #Buddhist #meditation practice called Maraṇasati. Of course the Buddhists have formalized awareness of #death. #DiscoverWithMe
